Luc Deliens, Professor of Public Health and Palliative Care, has a PhD in Health Sciences, and a MA in Sociology. Since 2000, he is Head of the End-of-Life Care Research Group, Ghent University & Vrije Universiteit Brussel, in Belgium (www.endoflifecare.be). Since 2005, he is Professor at the EMGO Institute for Health and Care Research of the VU University medical center in Amsterdam (www.emgo.nl). He received several scientific awards and has published extensively in leading general medical and palliative care journals. In 2009, he became the first member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Belgium to represent palliative care and end-of-life care in the Academy.
His work has been supported by grants from the EU 5th to 7th FP, FWO Research Foundation – Flanders, IWT the Flemish Government Agency for Innovation by Science and Technology, DWTC the Belgian Federal Ministry of Science Policy, VWS the Dutch Ministry of Public Health, ZONMW the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development, the Research Fund of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, King Baudouin Foundation and other leading medical and health charities, mainly about cancer and dementia.
Internationally, he is Chair of the International Collaborative on End-of-Life Care Research (ICER), Co-Chair of the European Association for Palliative Care research network (EAPC RN), and coordinator of EURO IMPACT, a FP7 EU Marie Curie Initial Training Network in palliative care research. He is advisor for many international journals as Associate Editor, Advisory Editorial Board member or reviewer, e.g. Palliative Medicine, Journal of Pain and Symptom Management, Journal of Palliative Medicine, BMJ Supportive & Palliative Care, Archives of Internal Medicine, BMC Geriatrics, BMC Public Health, British Medical Journal, BJGP, Lancet.
