Objective: To study a variety of outcome assessment scales to monitor and improve palliative care and how they benefit patient and family care. Programmes to be studied include but are not limited to: the POS (Palliative Outcome Scale); the MSAS (Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale) and ESAS (Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale); pain modules in the interrRAI Long Term Care Facility, a comprehensive standardized instrument for evaluating needs, strengths and preferences at the end of life of those in chronic care and institutional settings; a computerized clinical decision support tool developed for the treatment of cancer pain and cancer related symptoms, a study on computerized symptom assessment ie using modern computer technology to allow more accurate information about symptoms (pain, cachexia, depression) accommodating to patients level of functioning ( as part of the European Palliative Care Research Collaborative, a translational research collaborative with members from eight European countries, Canada and Australia).
Researchers will work on studying different ways of measuring palliative outcomes, pain and other important symptoms (cachexia, depression) and how they impact symptom assessment and treatment,
