Dr. Joachim Cohen winnaar Young Investigator Award 2010 (EAPC)
Dr. Joachim Cohen, postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de Onderzoeksgroep Zorg Rond het Levenseinde, heeft de Young Investigator Award 2010 van de European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) gewonnen. Deze prijs wordt toegekend aan een onderzoeker die uitstekend werk levert in het onderzoek naar levenseinde en palliatieve zorg. Dr. Cohen wordt daardoor uitgenodigd om een plenaire voordracht te geven op het 6th Research Congress of the EAPC dat doorgaat in juni in Glasgow, met als titel ‘Population based methodologies to study place of death’.
Prof. Luc Deliens lid van de Koninklijke Academie van Geneeskunde van België
De Koninklijke Academie van Geneeskunde van België (KAGB) heeft Prof. Dr. Luc Deliens (socioloog en voorzitter van de Onderzoeksgroep Zorg rond het Levenseinde, Faculteit GF) verkozen als gewoon lid. Het is zeer uitzonderlijk dat een niet-arts wordt aangenomen in de Academie. Hij is daarmee het enige VUB lid dat dit jaar in de rangen van de KAGB wordt opgenomen, en het 7de VUB lid op een totaal van 75 leden.
De Academie heeft 3 opdrachten: 1) wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het gebied van geneeskunde, farmacie, diergeneeskunde en aanverwante wetenschappen te bevorderen, ondermeer door het uitreiken van tal van wetenschappelijke prijzen, 2) bijeenkomsten en voordrachten organiseren en wetenschappelijke publicaties uit te geven, en 3) adviezen te formuleren voor de diverse Vlaamse en federale overheden in ons land.
McKinsey & Company award 2008 won by Lieve Van den Block
The doctoral research “End-of-life care and medical decision-making in Belgium” of Lieve Van den Block, researcher of the End-of-Life Care Research Group, has been awarded with the scientific McKinsey & Company Prize 2008. The Fund for Scientific Research in Flanders, Belgium assigns the McKinsey Award yearly to a PhD student from a university in the Flemish and French Communities of Belgium respectively, who can demonstrate the societal or industrial relevance or possible implementation of his doctoral research. The field of study can be sciences, applied, social or biomedical sciences.
Young Researchers Price of the 17th World Congress on Medical Law (WCML) won by Christophe Lemmens
Christophe Lemmens, researcher in the ‘Monitoring end-of-life care’- study, has been awarded with the first price for his presentation at the 'Young Researchers Forum' at the 17th World Congress on Medical Law (WCML) in Beijing (China). His presentation was entitled 'Do minors have the right to refuse medical treatment? A comparative study.' 25 young researchers from different countries competed
Prix Elizabeth Kübler-Ross pour jeune chercheur 2008 won by Joachim Cohen
Joachim Cohen, researcher of the End-of-Life Research Group, has won the international "Prix Elizabeth Kübler-Ross pour jeune chercheur 2008". The Swiss Institut Universitaire Kurt Bösch presents this annual price since 2001 to relevant contributions to research on palliative care, thanatology, or end-of-life ethics. The price was presented to him for his PhD-thesis entitled "End-of-life decisions and place of death in Europe" (promoters: Prof. Luc Deliens, Prof. Johan Bilsen, Prof Gerrit van der Wal). The jury praised the profoundness of the several studies on sensitive issues, also published in several prestigious international journals.
