26 Augustus 2010 - Death and the city
Op donderdag 26 augustus 2010 organiseert de Onderzoeksgroep Zorg rond het Levenseinde op de campus van het UZ Brussel een symposium, getiteld "Death and the City". Het symposium wordt georganiseerd naar aanleiding van het verschijnen van het gelijknamige boek, en zal de resultaten van onderzoek naar kwaliteit van sterven in Brussel aan bod laten komen. Voor meer informatie, zie hier. Inschrijven is verplicht, en kost 20 euro. Daarvoor ontvangt u eveneens een exemplaar van het boek "Death and the City". End-of-life care
The End-of-Life Care Research Group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels, Belgium (Head Prof Dr Luc Deliens) has two interrelated research lines, namely palliative care and medical end-of-life decision making. See keywords in right pane.
Background of the research
In developed countries, important transitions in demography, morbidity and mortality have taken place, and led to aging societies. Acute death due to infectious disease has to a great extent been replaced by diseases that often involve a more protracted dying process, such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. As a consequence, end-of-life care will increasingly become a new public health priority, and good care for the terminally ill a growing challenge for medicine and the health care providers.
Advances in medicine have greatly improved the possibilities of treating seriously ill patients and prolonging life. However, it is increasingly recognised that prolonging life might not always be an appropriate goal of medicine and that other goals have to guide medical decision-making at the end of life, such as improving the quality of life of patients and their families through the prevention and relief of suffering. In some cases, end-of-life care involves medical decisions in which hastening of death may be an accepted or, by some, even a welcome consequence of end-of-life care.
End-of-Life Care Research Group, Brussels, Belgium
The End-of-Life Care Research Group is part of the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Brussels - Jette, Belgium. The multidisciplinary group consists of about twentyfive researchers, most full time and some part time, and is composed of sociologists, psychologists, health scientists, gerontologists, physicians, nurses, etc. Most research can be characterised as public health research or health services research, and some as clinical research. In most of the current studies, the research group is collaborating with other research groups and institutes, both within and beyond the university. Furthermore, the research group also has intensive international collaborations, mainly with research groups in Canada, Denmark, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA.

Dr. Joachim Cohen wint EAPC Young Investigator Award - maandag 22 februari 2010 Dr. Joachim Cohen, postdoctoraal onderzoeker aan de Onderzoeksgroep Zorg Rond het Levenseinde, heeft de Young Investigator Award 2010 van de European Association of Palliative Care (EAPC) gewonnen. Deze prijs wordt toegekend aan een onderzoeker die uitstekend werk levert in het onderzoek naar levenseinde en palliatieve zorg. Dr. Cohen wordt daardoor uitgenodigd om een plenaire voordracht te geven op het 6th Research Congress of the EAPC dat doorgaat in juni in Glasgow, met als titel ‘Population based methodologies to study place of death’.

Prof. Luc Deliens lid van de Koninklijke Academie van Geneeskunde van België - vrijdag 5 februari 2010De Koninklijke Academie van Geneeskunde van België (KAGB) heeft Prof. Dr. Luc Deliens (socioloog en voorzitter van de Onderzoeksgroep Zorg rond het Levenseinde, Faculteit GF) verkozen als gewoon lid. Het is zeer uitzonderlijk dat een niet-arts wordt aangenomen in de Academie. Hij is daarmee het enige VUB lid dat dit jaar in de rangen van de KAGB wordt opgenomen, en het 7de VUB lid op een totaal van 75 leden.
De Academie heeft 3 opdrachten: 1) wetenschappelijk onderzoek op het gebied van geneeskunde, farmacie, diergeneeskunde en aanverwante wetenschappen te bevorderen, ondermeer door het uitreiken van tal van wetenschappelijke prijzen, 2) bijeenkomsten en voordrachten organiseren en wetenschappelijke publicaties uit te geven, en 3) adviezen te formuleren voor de diverse Vlaamse en federale overheden in ons land.
